Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has urged people to participate in the upcoming presidential elections scheduled on 18 June and to disregard calls to boycott the poll.
In the face of mounting exasperation with the presidential candidates who are dominated by conservatives, the Iranian guide has recently said that some candidates “had been subjected to injustice” when they were excluded from the presidential race.
Shortly after, the Guardian Council, which monitors the elections in Iran, announced that it may reconsider its decisions to exclude some candidates from the elections.
A council spokesman, Abbas-Ali Kadkhodaei, said on Twitter that “the Supreme Leader’s orders” will be implemented, adding that the council will soon announce its opinion.
Later, Khamenei issued a fatwa (a non-binding legal opinion) in which he prohibited leaving the voting paper blank.
The latest opinion polls conducted by the Iranian Students Polling Agency (ISPA) indicated that the turnout in the upcoming elections will not exceed 37 per cent, the lowest rate in the country’s history.
The turnout in the 2020 elections was less than 42.6 per cent, compared to more than 61.6 per cent in 2016.
