Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind on Friday launched an ambitious programme to modernise madrassa education system. Called ‘Jamiat Open School’, the programme is targeted at 50,000 madrassa students who will be equipped with modern education. It will work in the framework of National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) all across the country.

A twenty-day training camp for the coordinators and teachers of 100 madrassas is going to start in Pune, Maharashtra, from tomorrow (Saturday). Up to 2,000 students are likely to benefit from this training programme.

This was announced on Friday at an event held at the headquarters of the Jamiat in New Delhi. The event was dubbed as an introductory training programme in which up to 100 heads of madrassas representing 10 districts of western UP and Delhi participated.

Jamiat General Secretary Maulana Mahmood Madani, who is the director of this programme, said in his speech: “Our elders had opposed the government madrassa boards; time has proved that their concerns were correct.” He cited the recent decision of the Assam government which has abandoned the madrassas run by the government and merged them into general schools. He said that Muslims do not accept government’s interference in religious seminaries. “We have chosen our own path for modern education. It was serving our purpose well,” he added.

The event was also addressed by NIOS’ Assistant Director Dr. Shoaib Raza Khan who termed this joint initiative of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind and Madrassas as path-breaking. He said that the NIOS was ready to extend all possible cooperation in this regard.

The NIOS is an open school system run by the central government. It is a national board that administers examinations for Secondary and Senior Secondary examinations similar to the CBSE and the CISCE. It also offers vocational courses after high school.

Those who attended and addressed the gathering included President of Maulana Azad University Jodhpur, Prof. Akhtarul Wasey, Kamal Faruqui, Ikram Rizvi; M.A Khan, , Mujtaba Farooq, Advocate M.R. Shamsad and Maulana Niaz Ahmad Farooqi, Secretary, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind.
