Wed 23 November 2022:

A shooting at a Walmart in Chesapeake – Virginia on Tuesday night, killed and injured several people, though the exact number was not immediately known, the shooter was among those who died, according to the police.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting at the store around 10:15 p.m. and as soon as they arrived they found evidence of a shooting, Chesapeake police public information officer Leo Kosinski said in a briefing.

Public information officer Leo Kosinski declined to give the exact number. It was not clear if the shooter, who has not been identified, died because of self-inflicted injuries. But several media outlets have identified the shooter as a manager at the store.

Kosinski said no shots were fired at police “to his knowledge”.

He added that several officers and investigators were carefully sweeping the store and securing the area.

Investigators believe the shooter was an employee, or former employee of the store, who opened fire on other employees in a break room.

The suspect was also dead and police were not seeking anyone else in connection with the shooting, but Kosinski would not provide any further information regarding how the suspect died, their identity or whether the individual had any known connection to the Walmart store.

Chesapeake city officials asked people, to stay away from the store during the investigation.

Tuesday’s shooting brought back memories of another shooting at a Walmart in 2019, when a gunman police say was targeting Mexicans opened fire at a store in El Paso, Texas, and killed 22 people. Walmart didn’t have a security guard on duty that day.

Chesapeake Mayor Rick West released a statement early Wednesday morning saying he was “devastated by the senseless act of violence” and lauding first responders.

“Sickened by reports of yet another mass shooting, this time at a Walmart in Chesapeake,” Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia tweeted early Wednesday morning.
