◼️ US threatens South Africa with ‘severe consequences’ to come: On Wednesday, 16 September, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced visa restrictions on South Africans. These specifically target individuals “who are responsible for, or complicit in, the enactment or implementation” of policies the US deems “egregious”. Bozell followed up the announcement, saying that the visa restrictions are only the first part of the United States’ measures against South Africa.

◼️ Deadly cost of Sasol’s Secunda pollution: Air pollution from Sasol’s Secunda operations is estimated to contribute to about 1 000 deaths every year and cost the economy about R19 billion annually, according to a new health impact assessment by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (Crea). The assessment also estimates 260 new cases of childhood asthma and about 23 800 years of life lost across the exposed population as a result of premature deaths associated with the facility’s emissions.

◼️ Did ‘Kempton Park Serial Killer’ move to Potch? North West police have dismissed viral social media claims that the so‑called “Kempton Park Serial Killer” has relocated to Potchefstroom, warning residents not to spread unverified information that fuels panic and diverts resources. Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Ryno Naidoo urged calm and responsibility. “We urge residents to remain vigilant but calm. Safety is a shared responsibility, and spreading rumours undermines the very security we are working to uphold.

◼️ Plan to reduce mobile data prices in SA: Malatsi said the department was implementing several policy and regulatory interventions to increase competition in the electronic communications market. The first intervention and policy change Malatsi highlighted was the introduction of the Electronic Communications Amendment Bill of 2026. Malatsi said the bill aimed to increase competition, reduce regulatory barriers to market entry, and provide for roaming and mobile virtual network operator services.

◼️ DNA samples requested from families of six South Africans missing in Nepal floods: Initial efforts resulted in more than 1 000 bodies being recovered, while thousands remain missing, including tourists, pilgrims, and hydropower workers. Last week, Govender flew via helicopter towards the place where her daughter was last seen, describing it as an “incredibly emotional day” for her. “Nothing can prepare a mother for that moment — being in the air, looking down towards the very place where her child is missing,” Govender said.
