Fri 19 February 2021:

An Iraqi court on Thursday sentenced a woman “to death twice” for deliberately throwing her two children off a bridge into the Tigris River in an act of revenge against her husband, according to a report published on the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

The case dates back to last October when the 21-year-old woman was captured on surveillance cameras while throwing the two children over the Al Aimmah bridge into the Tigris River in the capital Baghdad. The victims were aged two and three years.

Surveillance cameras captured the horrific moments of the double murder in October 2020. The video went viral on social media platforms as soon as it was broadcasted, causing outrage among Iraqis.

In the footage, the convict is seen swiftly grabbing her children one at a time and then proceeding to drop them into the river off Al-Aimmah Bridge, north of the capital, Baghdad, before calmly walking away from the crime scene.

According to local reports, the mother committed the crime out of hatred of her ex-husband, who allegedly gained custody of their 2-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter following their divorce trial in late September.

The woman will be executed by hanging, the report added.
