Sun 22 August 2021:

According to The Independent, the municipality of Maenza in Rome’s Latium province has joined Italy’s €1 Houses project, which will allow anyone for the first time to buy a house near the Italian city.

Several towns and villages around Italy are offering low-cost housing to encourage people to relocate to their areas, which are typically experiencing population decline or aging.

The mayor of Maenza, Claudio Sperduti, said that putting the town on the scheme was part of a “pact for the rebirth” of the village, and aims to recover around 100 disused properties by liaising between existing owners and potential buyers, according to the publication.

He told CNN: “We’re taking it one step at a time. As original families get in touch and hand over to us their old houses, we place these on the market through specific public notices on our website to make it all very transparent.”

According to the scheme’s website, the town’s administration wants to “combat the abandonment of the ancient medieval village of the city center”, which is located about 70km southeast of Rome.

Buyers who are interested in the properties must pledge to renovating them within three years. Some of them are dilapidated and dangerous to the public.

Buyers must additionally pay a €5,000 deposit guarantee, which will be returned once the renovations are finished.

Detailed plans for the property’s future use, whether it’s as a residence or as a bed and breakfast, shop, or restaurant, must be filed.

According to The Independent, local officials will aim to match potential purchasers with their specific property demands, and while applications for the first few houses close at the end of this month, the mayor stated that more will go on the market when conversations with homeowners begin.

Although it is not required that buyers live in the homes they purchase and refurbish, Sperduti suggested that families with children and young couples who want to live in Maenza on a semi-permanent basis should apply.

The 1 Euro Houses Project began when several Italian municipalities established programs to counter local inhabitants’ abandonment of towns and villages and to revitalize distressed communities.
