ITALY SET TO DECRIMINALISE HOME CULTIVATION OF CANNABIS PLANTS

Thu 09 September 2021:

Small-scale cannabis farming will be legalized in Italy. On Wednesday, the justice committee of the Italian parliament’s lower house passed a bill to that effect.

The bill aims to make it legal to grow up to four female cannabis plants at home. The law also aims to enhance the penalties for cannabis trafficking and dealing. The maximum sentence has been increased from six to ten years.

Riccardo Magi, the Italian Prime Minister, proposed the reform. If the change is completed, Italy will be one of the first European countries to decriminalize home cannabis cultivation.

The change comes two years after Italy’s supreme court declared small-scale cannabis growing permissible. In 2019, a significant decision was made.

Cannabis cultivation is still banned in the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom legalized medicinal cannabis in 2018. Some British MPs have advocated a decriminalization initiative comparable to that of Italy.

Cannabis has been legalized in a third of the states in the United States. The most recent additions to the list are Connecticut, New Mexico, and Virginia.
