Tue 08 June 2021:

Multiple websites operated by news outlets including the Financial Times, CNN, and Bloomberg News were down across the globe on Tuesday.

Qatar-based Al Jazeera Media Network was also affected. France’s Le Monde newspaper started showing error messages that appeared on the website at around 10:00 GMT.

Separately, Amazon.com Inc’s retail website also seemed to face an outage. Amazon was not immediately available to comment.

Britain’s Guardian newspaper said its website and app were affected. Sites of some other British news media were also not immediately loading. The UK government’s main website too was unavailable.

The BBC and The New York Times were temporarily inaccessible, but later returned.

Many of world’s biggest websites crash, including: – Amazon – UK government – Reddit. According to outage monitoring website Downdetector.com, nearly 21,000 Reddit users reported problems with the social media platform, while more than 2,000 users reported problems with Amazon.

On its “Service Status” page, which sometimes went offline, Fastly said the problem was with its CDN, or content delivery network. It is a set of servers distributed around the world that serve the content that makes up websites, with the aim of ensuring that data is sent as quickly as possible.

The importance of such technology to the functioning of the Internet also means that any problem with a CDN can send websites instantly offline. In an update posted on that page, Fastly said it is “currently investigating the potential impact on performance with our CDN services”. Two more updates posted only clarified that the company is “continuing to investigate the issue”.

Messages such as “Error 503 Service Unavailable” and “connection failure” appeared.

The issue affecting the websites was not immediately clear.

San Francisco-based Fastly – a cloud service company used by many media – acknowledged a problem just before 10:00 GMT. It said in repeated updates on its website it was “continuing to investigate the issue”.

Visitors trying to access CNN.com got a message saying: “Fastly error: unknown domain: cnn.com.”

Down Detector, which tracks internet outages, said: “Reports indicate there may be a widespread outage at Fastly, which may be impacting your service.”
